Website User UnFriendly

Posted by: seorank.com.au in: ● October 26, 2009

Web design is a highly subjective process. His idea of what looks good may differ from the next person. While wild funds and blinking text were once considered ‘cool’, unwritten standards have become the inventory for all web designers.

In the following examples I intend to convey some of these examples user hostile to you. My purpose is just to get you thinking about the design and performance of your website. If you have one of these examples in place, and loves, by all means - leave it there! These are just examples.

1. Page Counters

Five years ago, each site had a page count. He proudly displayed a site’s popularity had become. The problem is, as many website owners began to find out, is that these counters can be easily manipulated. You can start at any number (not just 1), and can produce well over inflated numbers. On the other hand, if your site is not a high traffic area, do they really want customers to know that?

2. Javascript scrolling text

I remember when this first. In fact, I had in my home page. Remember to visit a website and all the scrolling text at the bottom? These were usually put in the status bar along the bottom edge of the browser window. They have become a big no-no in web design. Users like to see your status bar, or, if they do, you turn it off. Anyway, this is a useless tool.

3. Animated GIF excessive.

In the mid ’90s when the Internet boom hit, everyone was making a homepage. Sites and your ISP will give free space to put your information. Soon, aspiring webmaster everywhere were only populate the web with crazy animations and brilliant (bear!) Colors. Today very few sites use these files. It is now considered a waste of bandwidth. Like most companies pay for their accommodation by the amount of bandwidth used, animated GIF went down the road.

4. Under Construction Signs

There used to be (and probably still are) pages and pages of different graphics “under construction” for webmasters to use. Why is this a problem? Well, the Internet is not just a big construction site anyway? Are you and your friends, customers and other businesses are constantly updating and modernizing their information online? It also conveys a sense of lack. No company wants its customers to think they are running on a tight budget or production of an incomplete website. The graphical construction is extinct!

5. Page Fades

We’ve all seen those fancy pages that fade in and out of circles, spirals and even window shades. They fall into the category with scrolling text - obsolete! Most Internet users seeking information, not fancy graphics and page transitions.

Are Internet directory submissions still a good SEO method?

Posted by: seorank.com.au in: ● August 28, 2009

Most webmasters know that high rankings on Google and other modern search engines can only be achieved if a website has both optimized web page content and good inbound links.

While it is relatively easy to optimize the content of a website, it is more difficult to get good inbound links. A relatively easy way to get inbound links is to submit websites to Internet directories.

But do these Internet directory links still have value when it comes to search engine rankings? Can you increase the position of your website in Google’s search results by submitting your site to Internet directories?

A case study

An internet marketer tested three pages that were orphaned within the normal navigation structure of the website. These three pages were created to provide valuable content to search engines.

The three pages were submitted to some high quality paid directories (Yahoo, BestOfTheWeb, Joe Ant) and free directories.

About 45 days after the paid directory links went live, the web pages had increased visibility on search engines. Visits and conversions also increased and the tracking of the marketer indicated that at least 50 percent of the results could be attributed to the directory links.

The final results that were attributed to the directory link building included:

* a lift of traffic to levels that other highly visible site pages receive within 90 days
* an increase in monthly conversions for the business line of 45 percent year-over-year

What does this mean for your website?

Getting links from Internet directories should be a fundamental part of any search engine optimization strategy. You should submit your website to all big Internet directories and to Internet directories that cover your niche.

Links from Internet directories are only one way to get links from other sites. If you want to outperform your competitors, you also need links from websites that are related to yours. Links from blogs will also help.
